Hassen Memorial Arena
The Hassen Memorial Arena in historic downtown Armstrong is a 60 year old recreational facility that has hosted some of our community's most memorable sporting and cultural moments. Originally constructed as a show hall for the annual Interior Provincial Exhibition, the Hassen Arena became the community's first indoor ice arena in the 1950s and was the home of the great Armstrong Shamrocks lacrosse team.
The Hassen Arena was decommissioned as an ice facility in 2005 due to aging infrastructure, however, it's usefulness as a year round multi-purpose indoor sports facility is invaluable. The Hassen Arena is a unique sports and community facility as it is the only year-round indoor facility in the North Okanagan/Shuswap region and it now serves user groups from all over the region who enjoy: lacrosse, roller derby, floor hockey, softball, roller skating and school physical education programs. The Hassen Arena also hosts trade shows, training events, bike rodeos, concerts and banquets.
Due to its intended use the Hassen Arena was never fitted with a heating system, therefore, during the winter months the facility could use a central heating system. With the multi-use of the facility a new flooring system is needed to allow for more widespread usage including basketball, volleyball, badminton and tennis. The building also requires upgrades to the dressing rooms and showers as well as paint and other cosmetic upgrades.
