Kyle Community Centre
The Kyle Community Sports Centre was opened in January 1985. The multi-use facility was built by local contractors, business people and volunteers who felt that the aging Kyle Rink and Curling Club were beyond repair and needed to be replaced
The Kyle Community Sports Centre is the epicenter of our small community for the winter months each year. From the middle of October until the end of March, the Sports Centre is the place to be when looking for an activity to participate in as well as enjoy as a spectator.
For the 2010/11 season, our facility had an Initiation team, Bantam and Senior mens as well as a resurrected CanSkate Program. We also offered all levels of curling. For the 2010/11 season, we had 4 ladies teams, 7 mixed teams, 7 men’s teams and 8 challenge league teams. Our facility has curling four nights a week as well as hosting three bonspiels during the season. Over the years, our hockey teams have been very successful at the League and Provincial level. The Kyle Elks Senior Hockey team has competed in the Sask. Valley Hockey League for many years. They have won the league championship in 2004/05, 2005/06, 2006/07, 2008/09 and 2009/10. The Elks have also competed in the Saskatchewan Hockey Association Provincial ‘C’ and ‘D’ draws since the team was created. The Elks won a ‘D’ provincial title in 1978/79, 2003/04 and won a ‘C’ title in 2005/06 and 2007/08.
Volunteers are the backbone of what keeps our facility running from year to year. All members on the Board of Directors are volunteers. Last year, we had a caretaker to clean and maintain the lobby, washrooms and dressing rooms of the facility as well as an ice maintenance worker for the curling ice. All maintenance for the skating ice is completed by 6 crews of 5 – 8 men who volunteer for a 1 week shift every 6 weeks. The lounge in the upstairs mezzanine is volunteer run by members of the Kyle Curling Club and community of Kyle. Our biggest pride and joy comes from our Arena Kitchen. The local ‘Community Club’ is a volunteer group of local women who take turns organizing meals and volunteers for their week in the kitchen. A volunteer board oversees the management of the kitchen by purchasing groceries, taking stock of inventory, purchasing and receiving orders as well as paying all bills associated with the kitchen. Last season, there were 6 volunteer groups with 4-6 people on each group. Each group is asked to pick 3 weeks and 6 separate days to prepare for the winter. The group is then responsible to make arrangements to have all meals prepared as well as volunteers to work along side them cooking and serving. Our kitchen offers a wide variety of foods but we are known province wide for our homemade pies, desserts, soups and Sunday suppers. A large majority of the out of town ice rentals that we receive during the year are coming to our facility because of our kitchen!
Our facility is able to keep operating due to our communities drive to succeed and passion for the local arena. We strive every fall to raise enough money to keep our doors open for another year. We want to continue to keep our rink open so that all our children have a safe place to play where they can develop life long skills in skating, hockey or curling. They will also gain skills in teamwork, cooperation and volunteering. The gift of $25000 would allow us to complete upgrades that would allow us to keep our doors open for many years to come!
