NorMac Rec Centre
The NorMac Community Centre is in MacGregor, Manitoba, a strong Community based town. It is run mostly by devoted volunteers, giving of their own time to maintain this amazing facility, for everyone in the Community to enjoy. The NorMac hosts a variety of functions throughout the entire year which involve the local communities of MacGregor, Austin, Bagot, Rossendale, Lavenham and Sidney. Its central location makes the NorMac Centre an ideal place for surrounding municipalities needing additional ice times.
From October to March the NorMac Community Centre’s huge ice arena and 3 sheets of curling ice are very busy! The arena ice is rented out for Minor Hockey, Junior Recreational Hockey, Men and Women's Recreational Hockey, Skating Club, Public Skating, Sticks and Pucks, some of the Elementary and High school Physical Education Curriculum, Men and Women's Recreational Curling, Junior Recreational Curling, Youth Curling, Bonspiels and Zone playoffs. Both arenas offer a clear view of the skating and curling surfaces. Viewing glass, undisturbed from any dividers, offers a clear view of both the hockey and curling ice surfaces. From young children taking their first skating lessons to youth being scouted and drafted for Junior teams, the NorMac Centre has been the center of it all. The arena has been the starting point for both skating and curling for generations of children. We love it for the good times we have, we love it for the lessons it teaches our youth, we love it for the healthy living it promotes and we love it because it brings people together. Our town may not have created any NHL stars but many have gone on to play Junior, College, University and other Pro hockey levels. Our Towns focus is promoting lifelong hockey players. The success of this is undeniable! We have people playing from ages 3 all the way into their 70's; maybe even older!!! Impressive, for our small town to produce so many residents who love the game of hockey. We have it figured out, enjoy the game for what it is .... alot of fun. If we can always play for that everything else after that is a bonus!!
In the summer months the facility has been used to host High School Graduation ceremonies, birthday parties, reunions, fitness classes and hall walking, summer daily kids programs, auction sales, family and school reunions, local fair & rodeos. Immediately outside of the NorMac Centre is a campground, tennis court, spray park, ball diamonds and soccer fields. The NorMac is our gathering place!
Having said all the wonderful things about our beloved NorMac Centre, our rink is in desperate need of roof repairs. It is leaking and making ice conditions unplayable both on the curling and hockey surfaces. It is also creating a problem for our summer activities, where water leaking creates safety concerns. We risk losing our Central gathering place for our Communities due to the incredible costs of repairing our facility. What a tragedy that would be! Our rink opens its welcoming doors to people of all ages from all over our fine province and nation, hosting curling, hockey and other winter sporting events. We cannot imagine how our community would continue to function without our rink acting as our central gathering place. Our youth of today and tomorrow would miss out on our numerous historic winter sporting pastimes. There would be an immense void in our community and in our hearts, if the NorMac Centre ceased to exist. Stand tall with our community to ensure the rink will be able to continue.
Thank you for the opportunity to showcase our NorMac Centre, and for taking us into consideration!
