Sackville Curling Club
Looking from the outside you wouldn’t be surprised to find out the Sackville Curling Club building is over sixty years old! The wear and tear from our Maritime winters shows on every board. We need a new window or two and new siding desperately!
Over the past few years our emphasis has been on ensuring the ice plant is in tip-top shape. After all, the most important part of any curling rink is the ice! We’ve directed our fund-raising efforts towards this and a lot has been accomplished. Now we really need to turn our attention to re-siding the building. Twenty five thousand dollars from Kraft/TSN would go a long way in helping us move ahead with this project!
The Curling Club is a much used building in the Sackville community. Yoga and Dance classes are held on a weekly basis in our banquet room, the building is available for rentals for private groups and has hosted wedding parties, retirement parties, Christmas parties and more. Students from Mount Allison University use the club for their intramural curling program and students from the local High School also use the club. We have very active Men’s, Ladies and Mixed Leagues and up and coming Junior and Little Rock curling teams. Several bonspiels are hosted every year. Our Senior Men are particularly active with other clubs from surrounding communities as are our Ladies League players. A Mixed Border League gets us into competition with our fellow curlers from Amherst, Nova Scotia. In the past two years we have hosted Junior Cash Spiels, which were extremely well-run and successful. Curl for Cancer is a huge event every year! There’s always lots of fun and thousands of dollars have been raised for this very worthwhile cause. Curling is alive and well in Sackville! We are blessed with a wonderful group of curlers and a fantastic group of volunteers.
We’re very excited that Curl Atlantic will be in Sackville this September at the Veteran’s Memorial Civic Centre with the four top men’s and four top women’s teams from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. It will give all of us the opportunity to watch some top-notch curling, and hopefully increase interest in the sport and boost our membership! (Too bad we only have three sheets!)
We love to welcome new members and have free clinics every fall to show new curlers the basics of the sport. One of the best things about curling, you can take it up at any age! Not only does curling contribute to an active lifestyle, it’s also a great social activity!
Financial assistance from Kraft/TSN will be used to upgrade and improve our building and will let us focus our efforts more on promoting the sport and fellowship of curling to the people of Sackville and the surrounding areas.
